Tattoo After Care

Hey there! We hope you’re excited about your new ink! In order to make sure you keep it looking great, you’ll need to learn about tattoo after care! Everyone’s skin is different, but there are some basic tips to help your tattoo heal properly.

First step in your tattoo after care, once you take off the bandage, give your tattoo a good wash. Make sure your hands are clean before you begin the wash. Use warm water, and mild soap that doesn’t have any fragrances. Gently clean the piece, and make sure to wash off any ointment, blood, or plasma from the area. After that, pat it dry with a clean cloth or paper towel—no rubbing!

Let your tattoo breathe and don’t cover it back up.

For the next couple weeks, keep washing your tattoo morning and night, just like you did the first time. Keeping it clean is super important to avoid infections. Your tattoo will likely start to peel and itch as it heals—that’s totally normal. Don’t scratch or pick at your new tattoo. Instead, you can use a thin layer of a fragrance-free moisturizer that’s safe for tattoos to keep it hydrated.

While your tattoo is healing, stay away from soaking or submerging it in water. No swimming, hot tubs, or baths. Showers are fine, but try to keep your tattoo out of the direct water stream for too long. It’s also important to protect it from the sun. UV rays can mess with the healing process and fade your tattoo faster than normal. Once it’s fully healed, make sure to always use sunscreen on it, but that’s a good call even for untattooed skin!
